Funded by the New Mexico Legislature in 2025, this statewide pilot program offers immersive, hands-on training designed to prepare participants for employment on professional archaeological projects. The program is open to permanent New Mexico residents and will run from September 2025 through early 2026. Participation is free of charge, and applicants are eligible for travel support and paid field experience.
“This is a unique opportunity for New Mexicans to gain in-demand field skills and get a foot in the door of a growing industry,” said OAS Executive Director John Taylor-Montoya, PhD.
The program offers two tracks tailored to participants’ experience levels:
Field Technician Track
- No previous experience required.
- Entry-level training in archaeological skills.
- On-the-job experience in technician-level fieldwork.
Supervisor Track
- Requires a B.A./B.S. in a relevant field (or academic standing to receive one by year’s end).
- Advanced training in leadership and project management.
- Prepares participants for crew leadership and supervisory roles.
Who Can Apply?
Participants must:
- Be permanent residents of New Mexico.
- Be physically able to hike, dig, carry gear, and work in rugged, remote environments.
- Be available for full-time field experience for up to 3 weeks.
- For Supervisor Track: Have completed or be on track to complete a relevant B.A./B.S. degree by the end of the academic year.
Financial Support
- No Cost for Enrollment: The entire program is free for accepted participants.
- Travel and Lodging Support: Available for field training sessions.
- Compensated Field Experience: Participants will be remunerated for the full-time field experience.
